Mandala Market Bag Pattern

I love reusable bags so much. I love how versatile they can be which makes them even better. I use my bags for going to the pool or beach, to grab groceries, and to move things from one place to another. In 2019 I had designed a crop top that inspired this mandala market bag pattern. It was the mandala crop top and it looked like this:

It had a flower in the middle and was a lot of fun. I learned a lot after writing that pattern. Some of it was based around the “look” I wanted my PDF’s to have. Another part was is it readable and inclusive? In the end that pattern was kind of inclusive, but not fully.

Now onto the bag that was inspired by this top. I loved the flower element and thought it would be fun in a bag format. So I did it. I designed a reusable bag around that flower and I loved how it came out! It was stretchy because it has a mesh body. The yarn I used (and suggest) allows it to go back to its original shape after use. So let’s get to it with the pattern.

Notes:

  • This bag is worked in the round for the most part
  • Hook size and yarn weight can be swapped easily
  • Gauge does not matter
  • CH 1 or 2 does not count as stitch at beg of round, CH 1 does count as a stitch within the round

Supplies:

  • Bernat Home Maker Dec yarn (or desired yarn, I would suggest a cotton/nylon blend)
  • 8 mm hook (or hook to match desired yarn)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Stitches:

  • CH- Chain
  • SC- Single Crochet
  • HDC- Half Double Crochet
    DC-Double Crochet
  • DC2tog- Double crochet 2 together
  • TRC- Triple crochet
  • SK-Skip
  • ST-Stitch
  • Sl St- Slip Stitch

The pattern:

Start with a magic circle

Round 1: CH 2, DC 12 times into the circle. Sl St to first DC not ch 2. (12)

Round 2: CH 2, DC in same stitch, ch 1 * DC in next stitch, CH 1 * around. Sl St to first DC (24 including ch 1)

Round 3: CH 2, 2 DC in same stitch, CH 1 * 2 DC in next stitch (not chain), CH 1 * around. Sl St to first DC (36 including ch 1)

Round 4: CH 6, SC in ch 1 space, *CH 6, SC in CH 1 space * around Sl St to starting Sl St of previous round (12 loops)

Round 5: (This forms the petals) * SC, HDC, DC, TRC, DC, HDC, SC in each loop * Sl St to first SC (12 petals)

Round 6: SL ST in the next 3 stitches, CH 6, SC into the top stitch of the next petal.* CH 6, SC into the top of the next petal* around (12 loops)

Round 7-18: from here on out you’ll be working in continuous rounds.* CH 6, SC in next loop * around. Work as many rounds as you want to make your bag deeper if you feel this isn’t enough.

Round 19: CH 1, 2 HDC in the CH 6, *SK SC, 4 HDC in next CH 6* around, 2 HDC in last loop, Sl St to 1st HDC

Round 20: CH 2, DC in same ST, DC around, Sl St to first DC

Round 21: CH 2, DC2tog, *DC in next 8 ST, DC2tog, * repeat 3 more times, DC in last 5 stitches, Sl St to first DC2tog. Do NOT break yarn. Continue to strap

Strap Pattern

Row 1: CH 1, HDC in 5 stitches

Row 2: turn, CH 1, HDC across

Row 3-25: repeat row 2

Attach to other side of bag either by slip stitching it before fastening off or fasten off and whip stitch together. Weave in ends and you’re ready to use your market bag.
