Folded Ivy Button Cowl

Talk about a cozy cowl for fall and winter! If you’re a not a big fan of infinity scarves, the folded ivy button cowl may be the neck accessory for you. This cowl buttons and can be made to the length of your choosing or you can follow the suggested length.

The Folded Ivy Button Cowl has some simple textures and depending on the yarn, can be very squishy when finished. No matter the fiber of yarn you use, this cowl is sure to get compliments out in public. Make many to match outfits or have just one to wear with your fall or winter coats.

In this pattern you’ll use single crochets, double crochets, and a cluster stitch (2 DC, CH 2, SC in same stitch) to create the texture and squishiness of the pattern.

 

Folded Ivy Button Cowl Supplies

You’ll need:

1 Skein of Yarn Bee soft and sleek or similar 4 weight yarn

7 mm hook

3-4 buttons, 3/4-1 inch in diameter, 3 of the 4 should match

Yarn needle

Scissors

Sewing needle and thread

 

Gauge:

Gauge is not heavily important for this pattern, but as a guide:

After 4 rows of the pattern, the cowl should be around 2.5 inches long and 10-12 inches wide.

 

Pattern

Chain 30 +4

Row 1: 2 DC, 2 CH, & 1 SC in 4th CH from hook, * Skip 2 stitches, 2 DC, 2 CH, & 1 SC in same stitch* repeat from * to * across. (10 clusters)

Row 2: CH 3, turn. *2 DC, 2 CH, & 1 SC in the CH 2 space of the previous row* repeat from * to * across. (10 clusters)

Row 3: CH 3, turn. *2 DC, 2 CH, & 1 SC in the CH 2 space of the previous row* repeat from * to * across (10 clusters)

Rows 4-42: Repeat row 3. (10 clusters)

 

Once finished with row 42, tie off and weave in ends.

 

Sew buttons on a long side, near a corner and close to an edge as pictured below:

 

To wear your Folded Ivy Button Cowl:

  1. Lay your cowl flat like pictured above for button placement.
  2. Fold down the side that does not have the buttons on it
  3. Flip it over so the fold is on the “back” side
  4. Fold edge with buttons in and then fold the other edge without buttons on top to form a triangle.
  5. Bring buttons through holes in top layer.
