The main difference between these 3 Common Crochet Stitches
So I’ve had friends ask me “what’s the difference between a popcorn stitch, a bobble stitch, and a puff stitch in crochet?” More than once I’ve had to admit I wasn’t really sure what the difference was, but I knew that each had a different look. I decided to more directly figure out the main difference between these 3 common crochet stitches. They create a fun texture to an otherwise simple piece of crocheted fabric.
So what’s the difference? The difference is in how the stitches are actually made and I’ll explain that a little more down below. The just is each stitch is a similar but still different look. A popcorn stitch really sticks out whereas a bobble stitch is a bit more flat depending on the pattern. Now a puff stitch and a popcorn stitch could be easily confused as they are very similar in look.
How are these common crochet stitches made?
A Bobble stitch is made by starting as if you were making a DC, but you YO, and insert your hook 4 times in the same stitch pulling through 2 loops each time to be left with 5 loops on your hook before pulling through all of them. So you would *YO, insert hook, YO and pull through the stitch, YO and pull through 2 loops* 4 times, and then YO and pull through the 5 loops left on your hook.
A Puff stitch is made by inserting your hook and pulling up a loop multiple times before pulling through all of the loops on your hook. This results in a very dense bobble looking stitch. The number of loops tend to vary from pattern to pattern. Here at Knotty Bliss Boutique I tend to have about 7 loops on the hook for puff stitches.
A Popcorn stitch is made by working 5 DCs into the same stitch, taking your hook out and counting back to your first DC, inserting your hook into it and find your working loop and then pulling through to scrunch it up.
