Aspen Chroma Cowl Crochet A Long Part 2

This textured cowl is perfect for almost any hand dyed yarn. I’ve used speckled yarn, ombre yarn, and solid colors to work up a cowl. I’ve yet to find a yarn that didn’t work well. Welcome to the Aspen Chroma Cowl crochet a long. A pattern that works with just about any color option of sock/fingering weight yarn.

If you’ve seen some of my other patterns, you know that I love two things in crochet. The first: texture. When I design my patterns, I always work to incorporate a texture element. The second: color. I rarely use solid colors and I rarely use neutrals. I love bright colors and speckled yarn. There’s something about those two things that call to me.

This is the second part of the Aspen Chroma Cowl CAL. In this part we will create the first textured section and the plain section that follows it. If you would rather have a PDF copy that is ad-free head over to my Ravelry to grab it so you can get future updates as well. In this paid pattern, you’ll get not only what is included here, but also stitch counts for DK and Worsted weight yarns.

What we’ve done so far:

  • We made the bottom ribbed band and the dividing row to give us a crisp edge between sections. We also made our first textured section. You can find the first part here if you need it.
  • If you’re not already, you may want to join my Facebook group and/or my Ravelry group! You can win prizes by participating?
  • Need to finish up Part 1? Find it here!

About my example:

If you saw this in the first post, feel free to skip down to the pattern. I want to share about my example again.

For this CAL I’m using a hand dyed 75% merino 25% nylon, fingering weight yarn from Woolly Mama yarns (I am not affiliated, I get nothing if you shop with her) which is based from the UK. The featured image of this post is Knitpicks fingering Muse yarn in Impulse. Go check out the project gallery on Ravelry to see other colors that have even done!

I will be posting photos throughout to show a culmination of a couple rows at a time.

Gauge for this project is 10 stitches by 6 rows of double crochet equals a 2 inch by 2 inch square.

Stitches we’ll be using (and their abbreviations):

Chain-CH, Slip Stitch- SL ST, Half Double Crochet- HDC, Double Crochet- DC, Front Post Double Crochet- FPDC, Back Post Double Crochet- BPDC, and a special stitch: DC in 3rd loop (it’s like HDC in the 3rd loop/camel stitch)

Pattern Time! Welcome to part 2 of the Aspen Chroma Cowl Crochet A Long!

We left off on Round 711 so we’ll be starting on Round 12 for this portion.

Round 12: CH 1, HDC around, SL ST to first HDC (110)

Round 13: CH 1, DC in 3rd loop around, SL ST to first DC, Turn (110)

Round 14: CH 1, DC around, SL ST to first DC, Turn (110)

Round 15: CH 1, DC around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 16: CH 1, HDC around, SL ST to first HDC (110)

Here, we’ve created the plain section to help contrast again the texture.

Now we’re going to repeat all of the above to create another section of texture and plain.

Round 17: CH 1, DC in 3rd loop around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 18: CH 1, DC in first ST, *FPDC, DC* around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 19: CH 1, FPDC in first ST *DC, FPDC* around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 20: CH 1, DC in first ST, *FPDC, DC* around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 21: CH 1, FPDC in first ST *DC, FPDC* around, SL ST to first DC (110)

This creates our second section of texture.

After this portion of texture, we’re going to create that “border” again.

Round 22: CH 1, HDC around, SL ST to first HDC (110)

Round 23: CH 1, DC in 3rd loop around, SL ST to first DC, Turn (110)

Round 24: CH 1, DC around, SL ST to first DC, Turn (110)

Round 25: CH 1, DC around, SL ST to first DC (110)

Round 26: CH 1, HDC around, SL ST to first HDC (110)

Here we’ve made another plain section. We have about 11 rounds left!

Final thoughts for today’s portion:

After today we have completed our ribbed band, 3 plain sections, and 2 textured sections. For our third and final part we will complete our last 2 plain sections, last textured section, and our other ribbed band. This seems like a lot, but it’s roughly 11 rounds left to make. The last part of this pattern will go live on July 12th at 9 am eastern. I hope you’re enjoying this Aspen Chroma Cowl Crochet a long and share your progress and finished project.
