Summer Popsicle Sleeves: A Crochet Pattern

Summer Crochet Popsicle Sleeves

Hey and welcome (or welcome back)! I’m bringing you a free summer crochet pattern to use up those scraps of cotton yarn. Summer is my favorite season because of crop tops, flips flops, and all the fun things that can happen. As a kid I loved Popsicle/freeze pops but my hands got way too cold. I’d waste so much paper towel eating at least one a day if not more. Now, even though I don’t care for them much, I have a crochet popsicle sleeves pattern that will save hands from cold and keep the condensation from dripping everywhere!

With this pattern I’m going to do my basic pattern, but then have a notes section of how to customize it like I have. Maybe I’ll have another post just for my fruit themed ones if there’s enough interest!

The pattern

What you need:

  • a 4.5 mm hook
  • couple yards of a single color of cotton yarn (I prefer I love this cotton)
  • a yarn needle
  • scissors

Finished measurements: about 1 inch wide (when flat) and 4 to 5 inches long (when flat)

Magic circle, CH 1

Round 1: Work 7 HDC into ring (7)

Round 2: Work *1 HDC, 2 HDC* around (12)

Rounds 3-10: Work 1 DC into each ST (12)

Finish off and weave in ends.

This is a pretty basic pattern that I’ve found works for me. Below is how to customize it to mimic different fruits.

Fruit themed popsicle sleeves:

All yarn colors are from the I Love This Cotton Line

Watermelon: using Sage, Ivory, and Rosey II

Work rounds 1-4 in sage, round 5 in ivory, and remaining 5 rows in rosey ll

Strawberry: using Sage and Rosey II

Work rounds 1-8 in rosey ll, work rounds 9 and 10 in sage. For leaves: *CH 5, HDC in 3rd CH from hook, SC in next CH, skip 1 ST and SL ST to next ST* around (6 leaves). Then SC around (12). The SC round helps the leaves lay flat.

Pineapple: using Sage and Banana

Work rounds 1-7 (or 1-8 your preference) in banana, work round 8-10 (or 9-10) in sage. For leaves round 1: *CH 6, sc in 3rd CH, SC in next ST, HDC in next, skip 1 ST and SL ST to next ST* around (6 leaves). Then SC around (12). Leaves round 2: *CH 5, SC in 2nd CH from hook, SC in next ST, HDC in next ST, skip 1 ST and SL ST to next ST* around. This should stagger the leaves and leave you with 6 around. I did not do another round of SC after this one, but you could if you wanted to.

That’s it. That’s my Popsicle sleeves pattern for you. I hope your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc love their sleeves. Make them in all the colors!
